چکیده

www.thoracic.org C LI P A N D C O P Y The ECMO machine replaces the function of the heart and lungs. People who need support from an ECMO machine are cared for in a hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). Typically, people are supported by an ECMO machine for only a few hours to days, but may require it for a few weeks, depending on how their condition progresses. There are many overlaps and differences between the use of ECMO in children and adults. For a focus on Pediatric ECMO, please refer to the Medline Plus resource listed at the end, in addition to this document.

Ecmo in a diabetic patient with cerebellar infarction and ARDS- A case report

Background: Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been considered as a crucial modality for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Since ECMO is considered to be an invasive modality and may be associated with some complications, there are strict indications for its use. Here we report successful treatment of a case of severe ARDS with Veno-Venous ECMO. Case pre...

Cerebral aspects of neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a review.

BACKGROUND Neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving therapeutic approach in newborns suffering from severe, but potentially reversible, respiratory insufficiency, mostly complicated by neonatal persistent pulmonary hypertension. However, cerebral damage, intracerebral hemorrhage as well as ischemia belong to the most devastating complications of ECMO. OBJECTIVES The...

Are contraindications to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation slowly vanishing?

In the mid-1980s, the application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in newborns with severe respiratory failure gained a footing when fewer than a dozen ECMO centers became established. What followed was the emergence of nearly 100 ECMO centers in the United States and very successful outcomes for neonates who would have probably died without ECMO. Inclusion and exclusion criteria w...
